Okay, Yadibox, stand up.......there are no wrong answers to this one, as the man's catalog is chock full of hits, and you can't go wrong with any of them. Here's mine:
5) Rock With You---Mike got really smooth with it on this one, this one was a killer from that Off the Wall album....the video is a trip, the beginning of Mike's experimentation with glitter and rhinestones, he was almost gliding, with that big grin on his yet to be altered grill.
4) Smooth Criminal---I dug it when Mike put out stuff where he sounded pissed off, and this song is about as tough as he got....Annie, are you okay?......the gravity defying lean, the tommy gun....Mike killed it, like usual.
3) I Can't Let Her Get Away----I know, this is not one his bigger hits, but Teddy Riley's production was perfect and Mike just let it rip, lamenting that chick getting away....one of my first blends using a CD player, it goes perfectly with the remix of Can I Kick It (try it and let me know)
1a) Billie Jean---Come on....how does this one not make the list? That opening beat, Mike's vocal hiccups, the story (the kid is NOT my son), the video....not to mention Motown 25.....if you haven't watched that in a minute, check it out on YouTube, it'll make you feel like you're a kid again....who else on the planet could have made that song? I wish the floor lit up for me like that
1) Beat It-----this was Mike's alert to all, a call to arms, a red alert that something beyond what we knew at that point was coming.....listen to it with headphones and pay attention to how urgent the vocal is......Mike is almost screaming, like he had to get it out before he exploded.....such a simple melody and track, made urgent by the tempo and wail of the guitars.....Slash's solo was ridiculous, and it all fit together seamlessly....the video is crazy, the jacket with all those damned zippers, the fake gang violence.....what a song
Honorable mention to Butterflies and I Can't Help It, among others....who can claim any greater catalog, please tell me......
